I recently went to one of my LFS' and purchased some new pygmy corys and lampeyes.

I have recently posted a topic about some lampeyes I have bought several months ago and how I have not had much luck with them these past months. I have kept lampeyes for several years and have never had problems with them previously. The reason I mention them is because I figured I should be doing something wrong to have such a high death statistic (eventually 6 of the 10 I bought

).

This time when I bought the new lil dudes I followed the same procedure for acclimatising the fish as I always do, but over a longer period of time -and did more diligent tests on the water from the LFS. I was astounded

to find the nitrates were registering at between 60 - 80ppm!

My q tank is between 0 - 5ppm and my main tank is currently at 5ppm. When the nitrates read 5ppm the newcomers go into the q tank.

Has anyone else found nitrate levels this high from your LFS??

All new fish are doing well too - im happy to say, because they are lovely little fish.

Yes, I have noticed that the LFS often have high nitrates.

I've seen >100 from petsmart. One of the reasons I stopped going there...

how can it be? 100ppm is shocking! I thought 60-80ppm was bad enough.

MAybe try a really slow acclimatisation process next time? Thats a huge change in nitrates!

Maybe have a word with the shop?

As we know, he way to bring down nitrates is by water changes. Sounds like the fish store is trying to save on their water bill.

Hi, yes, I did consider saying something to the shop, but I would feel very awkward about doing that.

Yes, I will definitely do an ultra slow acclimatisation process the next time, that is for sure.

Incredible the nitrate difference though!

All is still well with my little new ones and my TDS meter I got for xmas has not stopped being used since -

the most useful present ever!
