Egg binding

Post by andyroo » Sun Apr 12, 2009 8:37 am

Folks,
What does Egg Binding look like, particularly in angles?
My oldest girl is breathing at the surface with very strong colour and a somewhat distended belly,a s though gravid, and ovodepositor somewhat visible.
If so, what's the fix?

ps: the platinum's nose has cleared up. Likely an infection of the nasal cavity.

My Angel died of this.
Looks locally swollen (where the eggs are) and yes, ovipositor partially or fully extended.
I have no idea if there is a cure.
Mine hovered near the bottom.

You might try treating as if she is constipated (Epsom salt bath). The swelling if she is constipated would be in the same general area, but I do not know if this has any effect on eggbound fish.

She died at about 2 this afternoon.
A constant fade for about 36 hours to the final, which was more sudden then expected, to be honest. Seemed alright one moment, done the next.
Had a quick look inside, and yes, there were plenty of eggs but couldn't see any particular blockage.
Fingers crossed it isn't contagious.

Egg binding in itself is not contagious, but if there are other factors that lead to it then other fish might go the same way.
A female Angelfish that develops eggs, but has no mate may pair up with another female Angel and the actions of these two may look like they are breeding, but they are using each other to stimulate the release of eggs.
Some females will absorb the eggs back into their system with no harm.

There may very well be other things going on, though. Mine had successfully laid eggs before, and had her mate in the tank.
