My tetra has popeye after healing from an outbreak of ich. All my fish have healed apart from one which has developed popeye and has a distended stomach.

I know that this is caused by a bacterial infection but is there anything that can help get rid of it?

It's still eating so I want to heal it. Unfortunately I can't afford and don't have a quarantine tank so I can't put him away from the others.

Is it worth me just giving him clove oil and getting it over and done with?

Pop Eye can be related to Dropsy. The fishes' internal organs are failing, and he cannot get rid of the excess fluid that is building up in his system.
Sometimes this is bacterial in origin, but it it is the form that is related to Dropsy then the fish is too far gone, and probably cannot be saved. Better to euthanize the fish before the infection has a chance to spread.

If this is not related to Dropsy, then the fish may be saved. Since there are several bacteria that can trigger this condition, I would use antibiotics aimed at both Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria. A combination such as Maracyn and Maracyn II.

I don't believe it's dropsy, no pine cone body but rather fat recently. I was gonna put him in a pint jug for the evening and put some epsom salt in so that the fluid is drawn out. Then replace him back in the tank over night.

I was also gonna treat with the antibiotics you suggested but again in the pint jug the following evening as I don't have a quarantine tank.

I would use water from the aquarium and keep it at the same temperature obviously, thats the only thing I can think to do without treating the entire tank.

How do you plan to aerate the jar? Do you have a large tuperware container? That may work better.

Maybe a trifle bowl with an airstone (not very big, but a nice surface area at the top)????
I use one for desparation Qtank needs and put a piece of screen over the top to prevent jumping to their death!
It has served me well and saved a few fish. I do not tell my guests when they come for dinner that they might be eating out of a Qtank !!!!!
( just kidding, I have never served a trifle out of the bowl since it went into fish service! , but it makes me laugh to think about it

I have used a 1 quart storage container to raise brine shrimp. To keep it warm I kept it inside my brackish water tank. That way if some salt water from the brine shrimp container escaped it would just land in the brackish tank, which is already salty.

A 1 quart container may make a good q-tank, but I would add an air stone. If it is bubbling too hard then put a Tee in the line, and run another air stone into the tank. By raising this one up and down you can regulate how much the one in the quart container is bubbling.
Also, add some plants so the fish feels like there are hiding places and is not so exposed. The fish will be stressed to be so close to the surface- there are predators out there.

The Maracyn and Maracyn II combination should be used together, and the package suggests no water changes. I think the medicine builds up or something.
You will not be able to get away with 'no water changes' in a quart sized q-tank. If there is any way you can get at least a 1 gallon tank, then you could probably get away with no water changes, if there is just one fish in there. Add some filter media from the cycled filter. Let the bubbler bubble through it. This will keep the water circulating though the media so the nitrifying bacteria will get the ammonia and oxygen they need.
