Dojo very sick Need help ASAP

Post by Ahurt » Fri Feb 18, 2011 11:23 pm

I really need help with a very sick Dojo. Not sure how old he is. We actually bought a tank and he came with it. He was in very good health then and now a couple weeks later he is very sick. We noticed two days ago that his tail was being nipped, it definitely did not look like fin or tail rot. We moved the aggressive fish to a different tank and he is not being bit anymore.

Today his face is "whited out" including his eyes with something, and he has large, round, grayish spots on his body. He is not looking well at all and his tail seems to be a little worse. I don't know if its a fungus, bacteria, or some parasite.

Any suggestions on what it is and how to treat?

Thanks!
I will try to add a picture or two soon.

Update: Red in the face, belly ruptured. Skin may be flaking off. I think he may not make it through the night but if someone can help it would be great.

The white patchy stuff is often a bacterial infection called Flavobacteria columnaris. It can be treated with Gram Negative antibiotics.

Once the belly ruptures the best thing is to humanely kill the fish. An overdose of Clove Oil works really well.
38 tanks, 2 ponds over 4000 liters of water to keep clean and fresh.

Happy fish keeping!

Thank you. He did die last night shortly after I posted. I was pretty sure he would and did not know about the rupture earlier. I believe we have a very bad case of fin or tail rot that came in from a store that I will leave unnamed. We are treating with Maracyn Two and unfortunately we have other scaleless fish in there. Now two tanks are now contaminated and we may lose more fish. Hopefully we will get it all treated and fixed.
Do you know anything about treating with Maracyn Two with skunk loaches?

Maracyn II is Minocycline. Treats Gram negative bacteria, and is good for several of the bacteria that can cause fin rot. It is OK with Loaches.
It is often combined with Maracyn (Erythromycin) which treats Gram positive bacteria (not exclusively, there is some overlap)

The combination is a wider spectrum treatment that is aimed at the main symptoms you see, and at any secondary infections that may try to move in on the compromised fish.

These two are designed to be used together. The packaging on each says so. They can also be used in a fresh water tank that has some salt added. (There is a different formulation for marine tanks).

FLavobacteria columnaris grows faster in warm water. If the fish species are comfortable in water of about 75* this would be really good to slow the bacteria. If the fish need warmer water do not take them down that cold.
This bacteria grows best when the NO3 is up a bit in the tank. Do enough water changes to keep the NO3 under 10 ppm if at all possible.
