How many fish do you have in there?! What an amazing video! Were those cherry barbs I spied in amongst the ruckus?

Not sure how many to be honest but it is well over filtered and receives twice weekly water changes, yes you did spy cherry barbs I was given 25 three weeks ago when I friend who had been importing fish packed up. I didn't actually want them in there, they were supposed to be going in their own tank with 12 B. striata but someone who was supposed to be buying the 9 filament Barbs that they were replacing let me down so I am still stuck with the filaments for now.

Water quality was never in question, it was just quite a spectacle! Why are you wanting to get rid of the filament barbs? I'm in the unfortunate position of having 8 of them in a 180ltr tank. They're about 2-3" at the moment but I fear for their eventual size....and I don't like that they've eaten most of my plants. My tank is thoroughly over-filtered though - got an Eheim Pro2028 on it.

From your experience, do you think cherry barbs would be a more suitable replacement for my tank? Or perhaps rosies? And as you're the rasbora man, are harlequins at all suited to the kind of environment in my tank? Sorry if I'm hijacking here...

I am letting the filaments go because they were originally going to go in by 250 gallon tank but I have 6 Puntius johorensis and 6 Puntius everetti in there and also the fact that the filament not only eat all the plants but it is hard work getting any amount of food past 9 hungry filaments to any other fish, also they are not going to grow to their full size in the tank they are in.

The cherries would make ideal replacements for the filaments, a lot of people think they are a sensitive fish but these seem bomb proof but I think the key is getting a big enough shoal and making sure the females out number the males at least 2 to 1. Harlequins would be ideally suited to a Loach tank with quite a bit of flow again the key is getting a big enough shoal, I have 2o in my sidthimunki tank and they love the flow in there.

Cherry barbs or harlequins......need to do some thinking. Do you think the harlequins would fare very well with five yoyos in there?

Harlequins should be fine with Yoyo's, mine were in with Yoyo,s before I moved the shoal to the Sid tank and I replaced the Harlequins with Emerald-eye, Glowlight and brittani Rasbora's.

The main reason I moved the Harlequins was that I wanted them with the Danio choprae, Puntius gelius and Puntius pentazona which probably wouldn't have done well with the Yoyo,s but the Harlequins were actually fine before I moved them.

Harlequins

Post by starsplitter7 » Fri Dec 14, 2007 10:00 am

I have five large Harlequins (1.5") with 3" Yoyos and the Yoyos completely ignore them. But then I have 2 3" Green Tiger Botia in there too, and they leave the Harlequins alone, so I think I have a weird mixture of fish. I also have Rummy Nose, Neon and Cardinal tetras in there to keep the Harlequins company. I know they are not stressed, because none of these fish school tightly, except the Rummy Noses and even those stray apart. They have been together over 8 months without an issue.
