I got a new loach

Post by MoonPye » Wed Jan 30, 2008 2:59 pm

I was browsing the local fish store and they had something called a mountain loach.. I looked on LOL and found several different species under "mountain loach". Which one do you think this is?

I know I shouldn't buy a fish before researching it, but this store has had them before and they went FAST.. so I wanted to grab him before he was gone.. they don't have them often but the guy said he'll get more in as soon as he can, so if they do better with more than one of a kind, I will get him some friends.

The pictures don't really show his actual markings, it seems to me he could be Acanthocobitis urophthalmus, he looks pale, maybe he will color up after being here for a while?

Hi Monica,
I'd say that was a Nemacheilus species, maybe N. platiceps or N. selangoricus.

Oh Emma, now that I look at those pictures, it does indeed look like it could be N. platiceps. Thanks!!

Oh beautiful, I hope your ID is correct Emma, because if it is, I have the perfect tank for this species. :D

I can't wait for the guy to get more.. I bet the first one would be very happy to have some friends of the same species.

Oh forgot to mention, I should say since you can't tell in the pictures.. his two front barbels are red, not infected or anything, look like that's the color they're supposed to be.

I guess I should watch him for a few days to see if his colors change at all after he settles in.

UPDATE: This new little guy is very cute and very interesting to watch. He's an active little guy that LOVES to eat, and gets along very well with the kuhlis in the tank. There was one tetra in there that seemed to be a little antagonistic so I removed him to another tank, other than that one he is fine with the other tank mates (one betta and a couple of cories).

Can't wait to get a few more.. been stalking the fish store every week since getting this one.
