VERY Sick Weather Loach- HELP!!
A week ago I bought a weather loach and now he has a whitish stringy sore on his back where his fin is. He also is now bent when he swims. The sore has become larger over the last two days. At first we thought he was just shedding, but as its has become progressively worse, I have become quite worried. I believe it may be columnaris, but would love to hear others opinions.
Our tank is 29 gallons, no ammonia, and with low nitrates.
I have attached a link to pictures that I took of him. Please help, I would really rather this fish not die.

Thanks!

Hi Julia,
Sorry you are writing under such difficult circumstances. I can't help you with your problem, but if you an answer these questions it will help the experts when they come along.
1.) Where do you live? (We need to know at least the country to help recommend the medicine. -- But town and state is also nice.)
2.) How long has the tank been set up?
3.) What is the temp of the water?
4.) Do you know the exact readings for Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate, pH, . . .
5.) What other fish are in the tank?
6.) Does the Dojo have a place to hide? Floating plants to lounge in?
(When you sort everything out, you will need to get the Dojo friends and a bigger tank because these guys grow big.)
Good Luck.

Hard to tell if this is Columnaris disease or fungus moving in on an injury. They do not shed their slime coat unless something is wrong, such as water chemistry. Did the fish have any sort of injury? Scratch or scrape sort of thing? Without knowing it is hard to suggest treatment other than keeping the water as clean as possible, nitrates under 10 ppm.
Have a look at the species index, and provide tank conditions as close to the requirements as possible. Very important that the tank water not be too warm or too cool, and highly oxygenated.

38 tanks, 2 ponds over 4000 liters of water to keep clean and fresh.
Happy fish keeping!

Hello.., I am not an expert, but I do keep weather loaches. They are absolutely wonderful fish, and my favourite. I'm sorry to see your guy looking like this. That must be hard for you to watch!
I have a few questions maybe you can answer, and then perhaps the experts can kick in.
1-Was your fish like that when you got him?
2-What kind of fish is he in with? Is it possible he's been beat up?
3-Is there anything in the tank he could have injured himself on?
It looks to me like an injury, and it is so bad his body is bent because of it. Like when you have pulled a muscle in your back and you hold your body crooked. His gills also look a little red. It would also be great if you could get a more close-up picture. It is so hard to tell from a distance.
Good luck, I hope you can get him feeling better!

ammonia, nitrites are 0, nitrates about 20
he is in with tetras, swordtails, danio, skunk botia, and platy
he does have hiding places and i dont see anything he would injure himself on
he was not like this when purchased, in fact he was very active and had a great personality
thanks so much for the quick replies!
he is just barely hanging in there today

I am a big fan of Skunk Loaches, but keep an eye on them, because I wouldn't be surprised if the Skunk Loach injured your Dojo directly or by chasing it.
How many skunks do you have? I keep my skunks in my mini grrr tank. That's my tank with all my quick, aggressive fish. Lots of hiding places.
I would definitely quarantine your Dojo, and if you don't have a Q-tank, go ahead and get one. A 10 gallon, filter, heater, a couple of decorations for shelter that can be boiled afterwards. Cycle the filter on a healthy tank, and you can keep the tank put away until you need it.

Hello again
I hope your little guy is feeling better.
I would also keep an eye on how your new loach reacts to the danios. I posted a thread: Help!!! Giant Danios Stressing Weather loaches! You can read about it there, a little further down the page. No aggression here, just the fast danios were really stressing my weathers with their quick movements.
I hope you can figure out what is wrong so you can get him feeling better.
