Lone Loach any ideas on ID?

Post by Doc » Sun Mar 15, 2009 3:24 pm

I picked up this guy a few weeks back as a lone Loach in a batch of Rasbora. At the time it was thin and greyed out completely but is now fattening up and feeding well - when I see it that is as most of the time it is hidden under the substrate with just its eyes visible..

Now I am thinking it is either Schistura beavani or Longischistura striata but I just want other opinions on it. Only cost me a £1 as well (I'm getting into the habit if haggling for fish...)

It's funny, I was just reading about the two species you suggested on the species index a couple of hours ago. I'd go with Longischistura striata as a first impulse but I honestly couldn't say why. Might have to wait for the experts to turn up!

Looking at the marking on the nose it looks like a single mark which would make it Longischistura striata, Schistura beavani tends to have two lines and two spots down the nose.

Nice fish and great find either way :)

Longer snout indicates Longischistura striata but collection locality will be the obvious key to identification.

I wish I knew anything more.. the shop didn't even know they had them in with the batch and the tank was full of mixed Rasbora species from different dates.

At the moment it is approx 3.5cm S.L. I'm going to try and source some more of them so they can go into the Hillstream tank with him..
