Cool journal.
I'm thinking something in line with what your have.
Any reason why the height of the powerheads are not level to the intake tubes?
Also, do you find a need to terminate the end of each intake tubes (for even distribution/suction)?
Setting up a 90 river tank soon

2. which intake tube are you referring to? the rena x3 intakes? or the intake as in pond filters for the actual river setup?

All your loaches are belong to me!
ran into trouble. the airlines were not pulling enough oxygen into the jet heads. so i had to rig two lines into the jet heads pushing air directly into each jet head. this worked excellent. also this is just a rough setup. i plan on getting a 3 way splitter to split that one line into two lines feeding directly into each jet head. what you see is an adjustable 4 way splitter. but i have a plastic 3 way im going to replace that with. it will also be held to the side of the tank with a suction cup and a nob.
ok got everything in good working condition. i ran a line split between the two jet heads directly from the air pump. this air pump is a 60 air pump with two airlines going out. the other airline is attached now to the horizontal bubble stone. this is directly under the bars for the rena x3. and i know yes its not good to have the bubbles going up the outtake. but ive had it like this for over a year or more with no issues at all. the loaches really love to swim through the bubbles going up and the stream going down on the back end of the tank. i call it the "loach waterfall".
anyway, here is a view of the setup. i have the intakes for the x3's in each corner of the tank. there is an aqua clear 70 waterfall directly inwards of that. then the horizontal bar is facing downwards. so its current is directly down as the bubbles come up.

you can see the bubbles working great.

so if your looking directly at the tank as it is. its a mirror directly down the center of the tank with intakes, outtakes and the aqua clear waterfalls.
over filtration? what do you think?
and disregard any ornament. thats just to seed the tank for now. also picking up more pool filter sand tomorrow. need about another inch or so of substrate. most likely going with what i have in the old tank as far as ornament and adding that treasure chest. they love that thing. been heart broken since i took it out. but now they will have tones of room to breathe.
