The Joy of S...Yoyos

Post by Marc999 » Wed Dec 09, 2009 6:52 pm

Well, it's been a long time since my return.
I have a 50 gallon aquarium with 5 yoyo loaches, 8 tiger barbs and 1 bristlenose catfish.

Quite some time ago, I inquired as to how to entice the yoyos to hang out together, at least once in their life. You know, those pretty pictures of them lying beside each other or at least resting close to each other. If they do this at night, it's news to me, but not once have I witnessed a nice buddy system going on.

Whenever they pass each other, there's a brief pause then one dashes at the other.
They also give chase to tiger barbs on a regular basis, usually swimming on a slight angle amongst the barbs, then all of a sudden push their snout alongside a barb and chase it for a few seconds. The barbs stick to themselves and don't even think about giving chase to the yoyos.
The only way I can feed my bristlenose plec. is with a chunk of zucchini or spinach. The yoyos are too quick on the ball with the algae wafers. The bristlenose tries to partake in the wafer, but usually a yoyo goes backside and pushes it away from her.

The aquarium decor is a light brown medium sized gravel, a few large chunks of wood, coconut shells for hideouts and a ceramic hollow log that the pleco calls home. Filtration is provided by 2 hob filters that provide quite the water movement. Temp. is a steady 82.

What's your take on fast/calm waters for yoyo loaches? Does one or the other affect behaviour?
I suppose I could get even more loaches and/or give the barbs back to the pet store. Would it be the tiger barbs throwing off their desire to relax together?

Marc

P.S. I'm watching the yoyos rip apart a raw spinach leaf as I type. Little pigs. Semi-tolerant of each other when eating in close proximity, but that won't last long.

Bump:

I'm still curious to know why my yoyo loaches are not schooling together. Is 5 of them not enough? They keep chasing each other if one gets too close to another. Anyone out there with intimate knowledge of yoyo loach behaviour?
