Powerhead spec and my loaches video

Post by millsn » Thu Dec 31, 2009 4:12 am

I'm buying the powerhead this morning so a rapid reponse would be handy!

I've a 36 gallon tank (I am currently planning a 100 gall to replace it) with 6 4-5" long clowns in it. I want to buy a/some powerheads but I'm not surte what flow rate to specify.
I've seen Emma's posts basically saying buy the biggest you cna afford but I suspect my tank size will limit the size of powerhead I can use.

Can anyone advise what is the limit in a 36 gallon? It's 4 ft long and 18" high. I'm trying to future proof my purchase for the larger tank. I suspect a nanostream is too small but don't want to epxense of the controllable tunze which seems to be my getout option if I spend the money. Is their a better koralia to use?

My tank now runs a 2227 eheim, an Ecco an Aquaclear 4000 (237gals/min) with a trickle filter off the Ecco

Bought a nanostream 6025, certainly moves the water about more. Probably about right for my tank. small for the next one I expect.
BTW here's the before video.

I generally start with about 10 times the tank volume per hour combining filters and powerheads.
For my river tank, 20x.

A 36 gallon tank with most average fish would therefore be set up with 360 gph. The flow may not be all in one direction, and often enters the tank from upper back middle, to spread out as it hits the front glass.
As a river tank (and I envy your tank shape... excellent river tank possibilities!) 720 gph, and, of course oriented to maximize the flow all in one direction.
38 tanks, 2 ponds over 4000 liters of water to keep clean and fresh.

Happy fish keeping!

How is the 6025 working out? I have a 36 gallon tank myself and I am thinking about buying the 6025 for my clowns. However I'm a bit worried about the couple of angelfish and 5 pearl gouramis in the tank. I'm not sure if they are going to handle the added stream. My idea is to point the stream from the top of one side and have the flow hitting the front glass pointing towards the lower corner on the far end (don't know if I am making myself understandable :D)

Will the 600+ GPH output of the 6025 make my inhabitants "seasick"?

Best regards,

Clowns like it. I think I could have doubled the output though from their perspective. I wouldn't think angels would be very happy with it though.

A side effect is that the anubis I have is now dying with the higher flow rates.
