Pronunciation Key

Post by chris1932 » Thu Oct 19, 2006 9:58 pm

I frequent Planet Catfish to satisfy my cory urges. The one thing I really like that they have that here doesnt is a pronunciation key, breaking the word down phoenitacly. Lots of us guess at it, most of us get it wrong. Just a thought.

That's an interesting idea chris.

In the works at present is a Glossary of terms, some specific to loaches that will include the terms that we have coined here and are gaining wider acceptance.

Pronounciation is something that's come up in posts before.

How do I say Botia?

Bo-tee-ah

Sewellia?

I say it Soo-well-ee-ah....anybody else?

Pseudogastromyzon?

Soo-dough-gas-tro-my-zon

Homaloptera?

Hoe-mah-lopt-err-ah.

You get the idea.

Martin.

Latin is a little like Japanese in basic rules of syllabic pronuciation. That's why Yasuhikotakia works so well in Latin, IMO.

Yasuhikotakia caudipunctata

Yassoo-hick-oh-tar-key-ah......cord-i-punk-tate-er

I still can't get my head round the spelling though. Have to look it up every time.

I've also heard Kitch-Lid quite frequently, and Pell-co...
There's too many more to remember but some funny ones...

I think I told you this but I've actually heard "how do you water the plants" and "How do the fish drink"...

And then there was the "I thought the bag just had to be damp like for plants..."

Concur. The answer is actually in my first post in the thread. Just drop the Soo-dough

Dragging up old threads is cool. It means that you are searching through the "undead" in the archives. Lots of NOS in there (Neat Old Stuff).
