New tank!!
Okay, I've never had a tank this big before. I just picked up a 55 gallon long tank today and I already have an aquaclear 70 but I'm wondering if I HAVE to get a powerhead for my loaches? The depth of the tank is the same as what they have now and they have a field day playing in it against the glass but I'm wondering if, since the tank is so much longer, I may need more... ? Also, does it have to be a super one or can I get a smaller flow one since I don't have anything like hillstreams. I have dojos, khulis, botias, a catfish and a shrimp.

Re: New tank!!
I have two powerheads with sponge filters attached in my 55. I have two bubblers and a large filter. You will need time to get the new tank cycled. Adding filter gunk from the old filter to the new will help, and if you can use sand, gravel and decorations from the old tank in the new, you will be able to grow the bacteria more quicky.

I use 2 filters on 55g tanks, a powerhead is optional to me. They add flow & make maintenance easier. If you have small shrimp like cherries a prefilter is a must. ATI or an Aqua Clear sponge over the intake, another thing to clean but not hard.

Congratulations on your new aquarium!
I have a 55 of of a little different dimensions 60" x 18" x 12". I use a Magnum 350 for particulate and chemical filtration and an Eheim 2015 for biological filtration with a Maxi Jet 500 (with a sponge) for additional flow. my loaches and rainbows appear to really enjoy this configuration.
