yoyo loach behaviour?

Post by vikki-jay » Sun Aug 19, 2012 4:12 pm

Hi, a friend gave me a yoyo loach that was getting too aggressive for her fish and after researching them I decided to get it a friend. Both are around 2 inches. The one I purchased is happily swimming around but the other has been hiding behind (and sometimes inside!) The filter. He's been there for a few days and hasn't come out at all that I've seen. I was wondering if this is normal considering the other loach is so lively. Should I just leave him to it and see if he comes out? I'm just worried that he's not eating or anything.
My tank is 60l and and has been set up for just over 2 years.
In it is a pleco and a betta which I've had pretty much since I set up the tank.

Also, is it likely that there will be any trouble between the loaches and the plec in future? I'm looking into getting a larger tank as soon as possible as I know the plec will get quite large.

Thanks guys :)

It's unlikely that the loaches will even notice the pleco, though some species of plecos can be a bit territorial and may harmlessly chase loaches away from a favorite hiding spot.

The yoyos will also need a larger tank, as they can reach as much as 7 inches (15 cm) in length when they are fully grown. I would also suggest (after acquiring the larger tank) getting at least 1 more yoyo, if not more. Loaches are always happiest in groups of 3 or more.

As for the behavior of your yoyo, he might still be getting used to the new situation. Be patient, your loach will probably come out more once he settles in.

I agree, yoyos are quite pretty and fun to watch.

Most people on this forum recommend a tank of around 40 gallons (150l) as a good minimum for most loaches. I tend to agree, but also keep in mind that the area (footprint) of the tank is more important than the volume. For example: a tall, skinny tank that holds 55 gallons (208l) only has an area of 624 square inches. A 40 gallon (150l) "breeder" style tank is low and wide and actually has a larger area of 648 square inches. I don't know what standard sizes are available in your area, but hopefully you can find a tank that will suit your needs and budget well.
