Assistance in Identifying Loach

Post by streptococci » Wed Oct 18, 2006 4:12 am

Hi,

I purchased these loaches yesterday under the name of a pakastani loach as there were in with the pakastani's, however it certainly does not look like one. I think it is the gold tiger loach - but the markings are not quite right with the almost blue/gray stripe inside the black stripe. Any assistance / confirmation would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Craig

Hi Craig, welcome to Loaches Online. What you have there is juvenile Botia Rostrata.

As you know, you can often find these as contaminants in with Botia almorhae and more often than not, it's this time of the year. Nice additions. 8)

Possibly this:
http://forums.loaches.com/viewtopic.php?t=2885

or:
http://forums.loaches.com/viewtopic.php?t=2729

you don't think this:
http://www.loaches.com/species_pages/bo ... orhae.html

I think maybe this:
http://www.loaches.com/species_pages/bo ... trata.html

these four species are easily confused as juveniles. Hope this helps.

I did not pick them up when going through the species list!

My other loaches are now in question

Post by streptococci » Wed Oct 18, 2006 9:33 am

After the earlier question I am now doubting the identity of these - I have them as Botia histrionica but now i'm thinking they're the Botia rostrata as well.

Thanks again

Craig

Ps. ignore the Botia dario - Queen loaches

No, those last ones are histrionica. Nice dario by the way.
Nice to see someone from Jo'burg. we're getting very international.

Hi Martin,

Thanks for clearing that up for me - I don't like to be confused with what I have!

I think after first finding the loaches website i'm becoming a bit of a loach fanatic!

Thanks

Craig

That's not hard to understand Craig. Loaches tend to be infectious, plus we try to maintain an air of infectious enthusiasm here on LOL.

Hence my signature

Loaches are infectious....just like streptococci!

:) I did enjoy your signature!
Also - you're the first person in 3 years of using streptococci to know what it is!
I'm just glad to hear there are so many enthusiasts out there! I just need to spead the word here.

Hehe! Yes, we have what we call the Hillstream Collective here. I seem to be the head Borg  I've spent the last 8 years raising the awereness of these incredibly entertaining fish and teaching people how to keep them successfully.

I used to be an Emergency Medical Technician, so I ought to know what Streptoccoci is. I'm totally fortunate in never having caught it

Did you look through the new Species Description Forum when searching for Botia rostrata? It's not been revised yet. Here's the old profile:
