This is my first post .I was browsing the classified section of price network.ca and found an ad : a clown loach for $5 , from a guy who is going to set up shop in front of a big pet store and sell his fish and equipments. Now if I tell the wife that I am going to a mall 30 miles away to buy one fish from a guy I don't know, she is going to think I am really obsessed, stupid or both. But I am beginning to love loaches,I realized they are more than snail eliminators.so What do you think? Am I crazy?is this a symptom of a new obsession?

The real first question to ask is are you ready to give it a good home? You didn't mention your tank size or other stock you currently have.
Personally, I don't think 30 miles is too far. I drive that far for all the time.
And yes, it is a symptom of an obsession but thats OK. I don't think you'll hear anyone here calling you stupid for wanting loaches--its a loach forum!

I know they get big but that video is amazing.shari2 wrote:What size is the loach in question? large clowns need large tanks...and they do get large. Have you seen some of the pics of large clowns on here?
Here is a video of Marge, Emma Turner's giant clown (and pod) at feeding time
I have a Yoyo loach ,a Chained loach ,and a clown loach in a community tank (100 gal)and just one clown in a newly set up 90 gal tank.as I mentioned I am starting to like loaches very much, maybe I should set up a tank just for them

your wife will probably worry if she found out the distance some people have traveled to get loaches. 30 miles is a mere stroll compared to the distance that Graeme in particular will travel (see the sticky about the best fish shop at the top of the loach forum page)
it is definately worth getting more loaches of the same species as you already have, and then you will find the loach hobby truly addictive
there are already several people with this afflliction in your area - it msut be in the air
what other fish you you have with your loaches?

....until he enters into the late-night realms of Yodaspeak, that is!
Welcome to Loaches Online, distrbd.
You really must add more of the same to your loach collection. It is considered quite cruel to keep Botiine species singly. Add more and you will be rewarded with so much loachy fun and interactions between the group. We consider 5 to be the minimum number here.

I will definitely get 6 more loaches for each tank ,they are about $40 for 3 in Toronto,if I find a local breeder here I will get even more.
That's it,I am officially infected!
I should start looking around for a breeder.

A local breeder of what? Very few loaches breed well in captivity...distrbd wrote:I will definitely get 6 more loaches for each tank ,they are about $40 for 3 in Toronto,if I find a local breeder here I will get even more.

Menagerie usually has a decent selection of loaches. Right now he has Clown, Rostrata, Histrionica, Kubotai, and Dario, and possibly horseface but I think they sold out
Yo yo's are available in decent shape @ Finatics on Kennedy...
Clowns are costly and fragile. You should buy a clown more for its condition than the price. Its not worth a five dollar loach that will be a problem, always make sure they're healthy
