Sewellia Fighting(?)

Post by mikev » Thu Dec 14, 2006 8:53 pm

Sewillia's here were very peaceful, until today.

The two shown below staged a one-hour fight on the front glass, rapidly circling each other and occasionally overlapping. The participants are probably the largest female and one of the smaller males.

No idea if this was a fight (they usually don't argue over the place on the tank wall, only quick arguments over stones), or something sexual?

Toward the end of the fight, the underneath of the female was reddish; the male unfortunately broke off, ran to the other corner of the tank, and was too exhausted to hold on to the glass -- he was sliding down. He is sitting in the corner recovering now.....

Weird.... This did not happen before...

And to make it more weird, there are now different two, doing the same thing on the driftwood.

You never know, mikev, it could be something more than 'just fighting'. Do you remember this threadthat lp8 in Germany posted? http://forums.loaches.com/viewtopic.php?t=3409 He/she claims that before their Sewellia lineolata spawned, an hour long 'fight' took place.
I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for you too.

Who knows, Mikev. One thing for sure is that competitive activity is a good sign.

Thanks!

And special thanks for mentioning this:

I missed this totally.

I know that there was no followup: the 2nd fight took even longer than an hour (I guess it is much easier to do this sitting on flat driftwood than on glass?) and in both cases the male simply left. (Actually, fight is probably a wrong word, at no point there was any violence, and they were overlapping their noses rather then pushing them against each other.)

Unfortunately, I don't know for a fact that the second fight involved mixed sexes, I saw ridges on the brighter(and again smaller) fish, but could not see their profiles.

If this happens again, I'll try to make a movie.

PS. Unfortunately, the photos of the second episode are awful (deep inside the tank and I could not use the flash), but this gives some idea:

The nose of one fish is under the other, usually when they faced each other it was the male's nose under the female.

... just talked to them and they allowed me a sneak-preview of the breeding adapter to add to the Pump-intake (see attached :P )

I guess an old Tupper box, or better one with a transperent lid, would do, ... allow a little water-space above the cotton (don´t squeeze the cotton to tight). Drill some holes into the "incoming" tube...
Eggs will drop down (together with heavy dirt) ... transperent lid would be good to check for cleaning...

Your images aren't displaying because there is something wrong with that URL.

You will notice now a picture box under your image tagged first URL
I took out everything from the ? mark in order to make the picture come up....but it will not. Your picture URL must end with jpg if it's a jpeg file. The other stuff is superfluous.

Your other URL link comes up as "Unable to find Server", so something is not correct.
