More on Borneo

Just returned from holiday in Borneo (Kota Kinabalu). To my shame I did not get to paddle around in the streams (too busy diving) , but I did locate some fascinating books, which you can find and order at http://www.nhpborneo.com/main.htm The Borneo suckers, by Tan Hoek Hui is a magnificant book just on hillstreams, and Freshwater Fishes of North Borneo covers loads of another interesting stuff. I expect some of you specialists already know about these books, but if not, they are well worth the fairly high price and postage.

Brian! Did you not manage to tear yourself away from all the saltwater fish and take us a few nice piccies of some of the freshwater areas for us then?! Well, you know this means that you'll just have to go again.

Do you know, Emma, I never thought of that!
It was amusing to see that the large hotel display tank contained only conventional non-Borneo freshwater fish. I did see plenty of "fresh" water though. It was a large river near the town of Beaufort (rings a bell with loach names?), running through mangroves. The water was dark brown and full of suspended solids, but also full of rising fish (and snakes and crocodiles). Show you a picture when I visit your shop.
The boatman claimed to recognise my loach sketch and said that there were "large" fish like this in the river. I've a nasty feeling that I might have eaten one from the barbeque after the trip - sorry, mea culpa.
