Well congrats to me!

Post by LUVaLOACH » Thu Mar 01, 2007 9:45 pm

Well I am the proud new owner of 6 tiny clown loaches. I really didn' have a choice other than to take them as a friend of a friend's hubby was gonna flush them down the toilet. Thy were a gift from a girlfriend to their teenage son.

They are tiny little things and so cute! They are now in my tropical 20 gal. tank along with 2 angelicus botia. I hope this id ok. This tank has 2 powerhead filters adn they seem to love swimming in the streams. This is new for me, I have never had clowns.

Is it ok to have them with the angelicus, I see no problems thus far. What should I be feeding them. I saw the post on cantolope but what else. I had planned on a bigger tank in the near future but I think they will be ok in here for a few weeks or so, then I have a 55 I can move them to while my big guy (at least 150 gallon) cycles.

Let me know what sort of goodies I could be giving them, I just adore them, they are the cutest! I want to give them all kinds of treats...I have nothing here but banana or apple, what about that?

Thanks so much,I am so excited,
Krista

Clowns cannot live on fruit alone. They need meat of one sort or another, brine shrimp, ghost shrimp, bloodworm. If not, a high grade flake food that has a good proportion of shrimp content.

Read, digest.....then let the little guys have a varied diet.

.....but don't keep them in a 20 for long.

Martin.

flush them down the toilet? what!!!!!

i tried strawberries this morning but mine love cucumber, salad shrimp, canteloupe, oranges, squash, shrimp pellets, algae wafers, blood worms and i think out of everything they like the mesquito larvae the best. oh actually they love snails the best but i can't keep a snail more than a few hours in my tank. snails are loach steak!

recently it seems my loaches are loving the squash more. i regularly give them cucumber so the change of food was probably appreciated.
All your loaches are belong to me!

Well done on your rescue mission Kris! 8) However, as Martin has already pointed out, you won't be able to keep them in the 20 gal for too long. The sooner you can move them to (mature and stable) larger quarters, the better.

They should be fine living alongside the B. kubotai. Here is a pic of our 8ft clown loach display tank at work, where we have many types of Botia living harmoniously together:

Image

It might not be apparent from that particular pic, but there are B. kubotai, B. histrionica, B. dario, and B. striata in there with the clowns.

With regards to food, the fruit should only be given as a treat once in a while. You really need to give them good quality sinking catfish pellets/tablets, sinking granular foods, and frozen foods such as white mosquito larvae (their favourite), brineshrimp, daphnia etc.

Best of luck,

Emma

I can only dream of an 8' tank! Really have to get up to your shop one day. Curious though, how do you provide enough current for the clowns while keeping the water slack enough that the angels don't get blown about all over the place?

Thanks, but I really had no choice, if you could just see these little guys! You should have seen my face when I saw them in a goldfish bowl!!!!!!!!!!!

So now they are mine and they are indeed in the 20 galllon for now. I have 2 more payments on my 150 gallon but then I have to cycle it. I figure if I have to I can do some re-arranging and put them in my 55 gallon if I need to.

Thanks for letting me know the other species they get along well with, the only trouble is I can rarely find them here. I guess I could order them but I will cross that bridge when I get there. Right now they are in the 20 gal with my 2 angelicus. Is this ok? They seem to be fine but let me know.

I am stocked up on all those foods so we are good to go, I am excited, hehe!

Thanks,
Kris

That is a great looking tank. Is that real bamboo in there? I like the look of that. Does bamboo have to be treated/blanched before it is put in a tank? Do the loaches like to hide in it?

LUVaLOACH if your looking for a big tank you might check out glasscages.com (if you havent already). If I recal they are in Tennessee as well so you might be able to pick up with no charge. They build really nice quality custom tanks. There prices have been super, but they have raised them twice in under a year. A 240g last year was like around $450 if memory serves, now its $540. I bought mine between those numbers back in december. One of thier best values was thier 135G but that went up too $270, but still a good deal, but might still be a tad small for adult clowns. They can also custom make just about any tank you can amagine, if someone wants their dream tank. They use glass braces on the top, and their is very little 'trim' but still is some.
