how to move my loaches safely to new tank

Post by MARITA » Mon Mar 12, 2007 10:11 am

OK - I have another question. Got the new tank (for loaches only) set up and want to move my two little ones safely into it. Can I use Ziplock bag? I don't have any other "clear" bags. Is there another way (easier) to move them?? I really need to get them out of the old tank with the sick goldfish. I'll will treat the goldfish tank - and will have to read how to treat the loaches for ick or velvet (I still think it is velvet disease).
Anyone - help!

I use unused food-safe bags for moving my fish. So, I think a Ziploc would be fine. I've used them before. Just make sure there's enough space at the top that your fish won't jump out during the acclimating time.

Hi,

Large enough ziplock would do, but you should be able to ask your lfs for a clean bag,

Acclimating is usually easier to do in a bucket, for small fish, I found using of CD/DVD plastic containers more convenient.
I really need to get them out of the old tank with the sick goldfish.
Eventually, you need to separate loaches from goldfish, they should not be in the same tank. But right now? By moving them to another tank, you will have to treat both tanks. If your other tank has fish in it, you will expose it to the disease too. If your other tank is new, you may expose your loaches to ammonia/nitrites -- these are particularly bad in combination with ich. And by moving them, you will stress them, another reason not to.

You are better off treating the current tank, and after the disease has been wiped out, arrange things better.

hth, good luck.
