Well, as I mentioned in another thread, I found Pseudogastromyzon fangi as "Fish of the Month" in a small town Walmart. I'm going to keep checking out stores and see if I can find some healthy vanmanenia. I couldn't even find the price on the fish I saw today and saw nothing about 2 for 1. I'll have to look into that.
Good luck with your new hillstreams!! :D

Do any of you have any advise besides what i have read in the life in the fastlane article?

You can surely put more .... one more species. Beaufortia's or Gastros on the walls.

Any loach besides clowns are a rarity in my area, if I find some of the others you mentiond, i'll be sure to add them, i may pick up a few more vannies i guess i really enjoy the ones i have already.

Anything else you feel i should know about the vannies?

More vannies? This is how felt when I got them first...still feel occasionally.

Beaufortia's and Gastros are not really rare, and may be possible to get by mail.

All right, some bad news. IME, they may be the most difficult hillstream to keep. From my original group, I did not have any survive beyond about 7 months, while other hillstreams fared much better.

I'm observing a new group of Vannies in a q-tank now pretty carefully, for almost six weeks, and I'm getting a sense that they have higher water quality requirements than other hillstreams. A UV may be a must for keeping them healthy long-term. So, if you can afford it, get it.

Very welcome.

IMHO, they are great fish, and they got me into hillstreams. I was able to resist Gastros and Beaufortia's, but not Vannies.

Good luck with yours. Post the pics when you can.

Anyone have a good way to make algae grow on rocks that I can switch out ?
I would like to provide them with as realistic conditions as possible once they are out of the QT

Algae Farming? Oh that's easy.......

.....actually NOT. It took me ages to find the thread and then I had to change ALL the (copious) picture URL's because the host site changed it's name

BUT......here you go....last Summer's algae growing experiment in all its glory......you don't necessarily have to include the 'secret' ingredient

http://forums.loaches.com/viewtopic.php ... ight=#7803

Be sure to read down the thread.....more pics lower down.

Actuallly, thinking about it.....it's getting near time to set one up again. That tank now has a Vietnamese Paradise fish in residence (in my kitchen), but I have other small empty tanks.

Martin.

Algae is always good, but for Vannies it does not seem to be a requirement, they are pretty interested in meat (frozen algae, frozen bloodworms) and the guys I'm quarantining now go nuts on Carnivour Pellets, while algae wafers will be uneaten in the presence of other food.
