Why did my loach die? (warning, sad pictures)

Post by big_spagetti » Tue Mar 20, 2007 10:29 pm

This is Henrietta, a golden dojo loach.. she was fine yesterday but I came home today and she had died. Henrietta was so beautiful and friendly, I am so sad to have lost her. She was on the bottom of the aquarium, upside-down. There's a weird grey area on her, that seems to be larger on one side than the other (see photos) Do any of you know why she might have died? Is the grey area a clue? All the levels of the water are normal, temp is 73. I've got a 55 gallon and she lived with 3 fancy goldfish.

Sorry my first post is such a sad one. I enjoy visiting this site and seeing all the beautiful loaches. They are such fascinating creatures.

RIP Henrietta

This death is so confusing, because it was so sudden.. Its like she was perfectly fine, and then gone. I haven't made any big changes to the tank.... last water change was a week and a half ago. I was feeding frozen brine shrimp, and she didn't come up to ravage them with the rest of the tank... I knew something was wrong, she loved brine shrimp. It was so sad to see her upside-down on the bottom of the tank. I feel a bit paranoid for the other fish now... I hope this isn't something that will spread to the others... :?

Thanks for the feedback, Fear_The_Loach. Fish are mysterious sometimes, aren't they?

Sorry for your losses. Half of one of my tanks got wiped out by a faulty heater a few days ago!

It may have just been her time, but who knows. but yeah, she may have either eaten something bad, or had gotten a parasite.

Sorry about this, big-spaghetti.

It's hard to lose these guys. You've taken some great photos to help others diagnose what might have killed her. I don't know enough about loach anatomy to know what organs are underneath that grey area. Maybe others will know more.

Welcome to the forum, even under these sad conditions.

RIP Henrietta.

I'm sorry to hear that your first post was for this.

It looks like her tummy was full, mine never have a dark spot. Could it have been bloat, blockage, or constipation?

Bloating naturally comes with death, so that may be something.

mythelene blue works wonders
