Have our Golden dojo Loach laid eggs?

Post by Mandy » Thu Jul 12, 2007 12:01 pm

Hello, just a lttle over a week ago, my 5 year old son wanted a replacement for his recently deceased Betta. He liked the long wiggly ones, 'eels' he thought!, we purchased 2 loaches approx. 2.5 inches long.
One of them is a little smaller than the other and definately more pink on the underside, they seem to really love each other and are fascinating to watch, especially when being fed.
However, this morning I switched on the light in the tank, (the bubbles run all the time) and I discovered what looks like could be egg sacs? They seem attached to the side at the top, are pinkish red and long and joined in one piece which narrows between 2 fatter bits, all in probably less than an inch long?
After reading about these fish it seems we may need a different tank very soon, as the one we have is a 2 gallon hexagonal with light, which gives off a little heat and an air pump, oh, and the gravel may not be what they like best. We do have a live Java fern in there though.
We picked up these beautiful little fish from Walmart for $3.48 each.
Are we going to endanger them in this tank and can this 'dangly thing' be eggs?

Creeeppyyy. I live in BC canada, my nickname is mandy and I bought my Golden dojo loaches from Walmart too... 'cept I have six...only paid a $1.98...but that's gonna add up fast with the huge size tank they're gonna need... They get like 10 inches long.....so...I'm gonna need a huuuuuge tank. I don't know about eggs, but they sure sound like it.

Oh and be careful with the hexagon tanks, they've been known to drive some fish insane because they see their reflexion then it dissapears at certain angles.

Thankyou for your response, unfortunately these egg things have dissapeared, assume they ate them? Must find out if I need to remove them to a safe tank to hatch, sounds like we should find someone to rehome fish or buy a new tank! Now my dear sweet boy wants a hermit crab! 5 year old boys, eh? I think it might be a gold fish if he's lucky.
We are in Summerland BC, and its certainly living up to its name this week, its 37oC!

I'm in kelowna actually..not very far from you. So if you need to rehome your loaches...I'll take 'em. I love dojo loaches. And by the way, I too feel the heat over here. It's hoot.

But honestly if you like the loaches get a bigger tank...they're pretty cool little guys. I love 'em. Mine'll be getting a 40 gallon breeder soon.

Mandy, Goldfish also require a large tank. You might try a gold and the Dojos.

I think Dojos that are only 2-1/2" are way too young to lay eggs. Maybe snail eggs?
38 tanks, 2 ponds over 4000 liters of water to keep clean and fresh.

Happy fish keeping!

Hello again, and thank you for the advice, we may well consider your offer to re home our loaches. By the way, they're called Doe and Joe!

Also with regard to the eggs, we don't have any snails, but did recently buy the Java Fern, maybe something was in there?

I did take photos of fish and 'egg things' and will figure how to post them so you good people can take a look,

Thanks again, Mandy
