Post by joren » Sat Aug 04, 2007 11:44 am

Hi , I've been watching this site quite a while and i've also looked on the forum a bit.
Now I bought a few loaches about a week ago , and dont know what specie it is .

I'm thinking sinibotia pulchra or sinibotia supercialaris (they both have enough space in the aquarium so don't think I just bought them without thinking, I wanna make sure that the fish have a good home )

The photo's were made by my cellphone ( nokia 3250 ) and I'm from Belgium , so there may be some mistakes in my writhing .

Hi joren and welcome to Loaches Online.
You were doing pretty good with your writing (no 'h') until the last word

Writhing: Having a twisting or snake-like or worm-like motion.

That gave me a good laugh anyway

Do not worry about perfection in English, we have members from all over the world here and we usually work out what people are saying. It's a good way of improving your English actually.

It's a shame that your pictures are so small because it makes positive ID more difficult. Sinibotia pulchra is generally the most frequent member of this loach family that you will see, so it's probably that species.

Another possibility apart from S. superciliaris is S. longiventralis. If there's any way you could get some decent digital camera pics of the fish it would help greatly in ID.

Well already tought the picture were to small to ID the fish , but what's the difference between the different species you mentioned apart from size ?
And with how many should I keep them ?

The differences as regards ID are really down to the width of stripes and general colouration. Here's page that allows you to directly compare:

http://www.loaches.com/species-index/pi ... de-stripes

However, the striping can vary a lot within each species so one may look rather like one from another species.

As regards aquarium care there is no difference. They are all peaceful and like the company of others of their species. They tend to come out more at night than other Botiine loaches so we do not know much about their behaviour to one another compared to other loaches because of that.

I would agree with Martin that this chap is the Sinibotia pulchra. You can see the black line marking carrying through the eye line.
