Levasole dosage calculaton

Post by qumqats » Tue Aug 28, 2007 4:58 am

I've got a kubotai that I recently noticed was razor thin. CWS seems the most likely cause. Since I recently did a treatment of antibiotics on this tank it seems the next step is Levasole.

Please comment on my thought process here.

18.15G of levamisole hydrochloride in a 500ml bottle comes out to 36.3mg per ml of solution : 18.15 / 500 = 0.0363

65 gallons (between tank and sump) is 246.025 liters

4mg per liter ( too much? 2mg seems standard but I've found references to using as much as 10mg )

4*246.025 = 984.1mg for the 65 gallons I have. round up to 1000mg

1000 /36.3 = 27.548ml of solution to dose the 65G tank. round down to 27ml

So . . . add 500ml of water to the bottle
add 27 ml of the solution to my tank.

I add 10G a day to the tank, the excess flows out via an overflow standpipe in the sump.

10G = 37.85l
4*37.85 = 151.4mg
151.4/36.3 = 4.17 rounded down to 4ml

so for every 10G of water added, add 4ml of solution.

How long should I continue this treatment?

See here:

(scroll through the stuff you don't need down to the dosing section if you want)

and here for a handy dandy calculator chefkeith built:

The dosage for levamisole in a fish tank is 2mg/l. Using more does not increase the efficacy of the med.
There's also a veterinarian's recommended protocol for treatment near the bottom.

Whoa! Good Stuff. I did some searching, but I guess I didn't search hard enough. This link should be in a sticky topic.

This page, while neat! , isn't of use to me. I don't want to measure out the power. I want to measure out of the 500ml bottle of solution.
It's much easier for me to measure 1ml of liquid than 1mg of power.

sounds good. not that I have any shortage of Levasole. I have 2 bottles that are supposed to be expiring soon so I'd rather use it.

So the Levasole paralyzies the worms and they are then expelled out of the body of the fish. It doesn't kill the worms!?
So what happens to the worms when they're out of the fish?
Do they die from lack of a host?
Can they be eaten by and reinfect another fish?
Or does the answer depend on which species of worm is in question?

Here's my new #s:
36.3mg of Levamisole HCl per ml of solution
~90mg of Levamisole HCl will treat 10 gallons with a 2 ppm concentration.
~ 3ml of solution per 10G
~20ml of solution per 65G
( lots of rounding and slight overdose )
