Water flow for Clown Loaches

I have a 55 gal aquarium w/4 loaches. Is a maxijet 1200 too much flow for this situation?? Thanks, DI

A Maxijet 1200 will not prove too much for your clown loaches. In fact, they would enjoy a lot more flow.

Hi Di and welcome to LOL. My 125 gallon Clown Loach aquarium has various pumps/filters moving around 3000 GPH. Do the math and you'll find that a Maxijet 1200 in a 55 is nowhere near as much flow.

As Emma said, the Clowns love lots of water movement.

Maxijet 1200 = 295GPH which means it turns 55 gallons over 5.3 times per hour

3000 GPH turns over 125 gallons 24 times per hour.

My electrical use is included in my rent The only thing they charge extra for is if you have an air-conditioner.

You can get effecient water circulation pumps that will flow several times higher than the MJ1200 with half the power consumption. For example look at the Koralia4 which is rated 1200GPH and draws 12 watts. I did a search for the MJ 1200 and its 295gph and 20W.

Although the pumps are a big factor in the energy consumption of the system since they run 24x7x365, many bigger tanks have a lot high power devices than pumps. I'm setting up a tank now that has about 600-700W of light and 800W of heaters, for example. I havent figured out which pump to use yet but even the enormous Pentair Qiet One 9000 pumps 2300gph, 19ft head, and uses only 145W (or for the 50Hz 240V world its 8800lph, 5.8M head, 1.2A 140W).
