How many is too many??

Post by Rod » Tue Apr 11, 2006 8:50 am

I had a look at the talk about tanks and fish numbers..It makes me wonder if I have over done it in my tank...
I have a 372 Ltr or 100 GL tank ( I had to convert it hope its right as I never use Gallons) Anyway, in this tank I have..

7 Clown loaches
8 Yo Yo
6 Khuli
2 Scooters (may be hillstreams)
2 Bristle nosed cats
2 Spiny nosed eels
1 Pleco
6 pairs of small to medium tang cichlids.

I have just sold my 6ft tank and found it hard to part with a lot of the fish, even though I had to in the end.
Filtration is a large Eheim canister and a 3 stage foam filter power head.
I water change every three to four weeks, just under half the tank.

So what does the brains trust think??

I can't answer your question, but I'd like to ask a similar question...

Does the 1" of fish per gallon rule still apply? Or does it depend on the kind of fish? :?:

Hi Rod,

You probably won't want to hear this, but I think you are quite heavily stocked there. Also, bear in mind that your Clown Loaches are going to get much bigger (they would have liked that 6ft tank) as is the pleco if it is the common variety.

Also, your fish would also be much better served by smaller, more frequent partial water changes.

Do you think you could provide a photograph of your 'Scooters' so that we can identify if you have hillstream loaches of some description?

Cheers Emma,
I have had my clowns for about two years and prior to this lot I had 6 really old ones I had for five years before that, they were huge. Unfortunately I had a heater failure and they all fell ill and I lost them to the dreaded Ich.
I am in the process of downsizing from Africans, to river loaches as I have a new baby on the way soon.
I will try to get some photos for you, but I am a bit of a technophobic, hopefully my wife can organise that side of things for me. Even though she thinks Im obsessed......?

Thanks again
ROD
