(MOVED) CL (& possiblly striata) and BIG snails

Post by ashbyyokosuka » Sun Sep 23, 2007 1:35 am

Hello,
I am wondering how small (2") CL's would do with a BIGGER snail in the tank? (i do not have any other loaches, but might get some striata loaches)
asking for trouble? or would they leave them alone?

thanks!

Clown Loaches and snail

Post by starsplitter7 » Sun Sep 23, 2007 9:35 am

I am no expert, but how big of a snail?

I had an apple snail (2" diameter) in with my Clown loaches, and I don't know who (I have a bunch of different loaches including B. striata) bugged it into its shell, but it became completely reclusive. I have it on its own now. I also had another apple (1.5") with pea puffers (3/4 ") and they stalked it around the tank (like Foghorn Leghorn being stalked by the chicken hawk :) ), so now the snails live with my betta. Everyone's happy. :)

I breed small snails for the loaches and puffers. I actually love snails, so it is hard to give them to my fish.

I wouldn't advise housing snails (even big ones) and loaches together. The loaches will continually harass them and bite at the eye stalks & tentacles. :?

OK
thanks folks~

that is what i was thinking

i was *hoping* that they might leave giant snails alone--
but it doesn't sound like it.

i like snails
but i like my loaches WHOLE lot better :)

Snails and Loaches

Post by starsplitter7 » Mon Sep 24, 2007 10:35 am

The loaches sure didn't leave my snails alone. No matter how big or small. I just got a small tank for my snails (Apple and Mystery), and they are much happier.

I breed pond snails for the loaches, and I had a very happy Clown whizzing around the tank with a snail on his nose. You could almost hear him saying "Na Ni, Na Ni, Na Na" to the other loaches. :)

I watch the puffers stalk the snails around their tank too. There are skunk loaches with the puffers, and the skunks click excitedly everytime a few snails hit the tank.

It's hard, because I love the snails, so I try to give them a fighting chance. Plants and places to hide.

My nerites are completely ignored by my yoyos and striata. As are my shrimp. Dunno, mileage varies.

Nerites

Hi,

Could you show me a picture of your nerites? I thought they were saltwater. I am curious, because I do like them. Thanks, Tanja

They appear in a couple of photos in these threads. If they are marine, they're doing remarkably well!

---> I saw your thread after you had relocated. Beautiful tank. I didn't realize those were nerites in your photos.

---> I have never seen snails like yours in tanks here. Like fish, there are many specie of nerites, and I am sure some are freshwater. :) Here's an example of a salt water one I find on the beaches in Florida.

I wish I could find them here for my tank. Thank you, Tanja.
