My kuhlis always loachy dance on 'east' side of tank.

Hi all,

Now don't laugh too hard as I try to make some observations here. I'm often up during the dark hours to get my husband off to work, so I get to see my kuhlis dancing just about every night. I've been noticing that they are always on the left side of the tank which also happens to face the East. When they were in QT in another room, they also chose the left side (east side) of the tank for their dancing.

I've been wondering if this is just coincidence or perhaps they have an instinctive sense of direction and are just trying to get "home."

Well, that's my observation!! Where do your kuhlis dance??



If you find this utterly ridiculous, just nicely tell me to go back to baking brownies, and I won't be offended in the least.

Was the filter in the same relative position in each of these tanks? Could have something to do with that.

Yes, I would say the filter was in the same relative position in both tanks.

Right side (East), and left (North) in another tank. No laughing.

I suspect that palaeodave is correct, they seem to prefer slightly more active water when they dance. There is a bit of vertical current on the preferred sides, none on the opposite.

I miss my kuhlis. Gave my smaller tank to an ex when I moved and the kuhlis went with it. She's taking good care of them.

So perhaps it is just a coincidence. We'll be moving the tank to the opposite side of the room sometime this winter, so I'll see what happens then!

I guess I'll go check some recipes now. Marshmallows....hmmm...never had them that way!!

I tend to think it is the placement of the filters, too. But have you considered whether an east window may be the "first light" of the morning to them? Depending on how your home is arranged, this is the only other factor that might play a role.

Yes, Mark, both rooms that the kuhlis have been in have east facing windows--so, maybe that is it.
