All the various types of Pangios I import arrive in bags with almond leaves in them, no matter who the supplier is. The water is usually dark brown.

Unfortunately, I would say that the loss Martin has suffered my be due to the fact that a lot of the 'stripy' kuhlis tend to be very sensitive to the shipping process and if problems are going to occur, it is usually occur a few days afterwards. How are the rest of that particular shipment doing at the store? I know Harold keeps his place to a very high standard, but no-one knows what conditions the fish came from and how stressful the journey was. I think the Almond Leaf thing is just a coincidence and I'm really sorry to hear about your loss Martin (particularly that really stripy one).

On a side note, on a couple of occasions in the past, we have had to use Melafix on the loach system (centralised) and it has never caused problems with any of our loaches, including Pangios. I wonder why it seems to be so lethal in other situations?

One thing I have read somewere concerning the almond tree leaves is that they should not be used for too long continously as it can develop some liver isues on fishes if used for long periods. Because of that, I keep alternating almond tree leaves and Purigen to adsorb it´s organic compounds from time to time.

Almond trees (Terminalia catapa) are wide spread here in Rio de Janeiro. You can find them in every street corner. I do colect, wash, let them dry for a few days and storage for further use.

Sorry to hear of your loss, Martin. Those were such beatiful fish.
Has anyone tried oak leaves for loaches? They are supposedly good as well. I found this article on the web http://www.practicalfishkeeping.co.uk/p ... ?blogid=56. I was going to try some but after Martin's sad loss I'm a bit worried, to say the least.

Theres a LFS near me which uses oak leaves in some tanks, which do occasionally have loaches in them. I've seen them used in discus tanks as well- never tried them myself though, just the Indian almond leaves

I have been using leaves from my pin oak tree in my kuhli tank. The leaves have been in for more than a month with no problems that I know of. I keep about 5 leaves in but could probably add more.

I'm in the wrong business. I went to one of the local fish auctions today.

Someone was selling supertiny almond leaves (less than 5in) and was getting $3 each for them.

I paid $30 for 200 leaves including shipping I could have made $600. Sheesh.


On a good note though, I picked up 6 sumo loaches for about $24.

I'm beginning to see lots more loaches. I saw a 5in blueberry botia that went for about $20....

Kevin, the only loach labelled that way is a dyed loach. Not Yasuhikotakia modesta?:?
