yo-yo loach
hi, new to the forum, i have 2 yo-yo's 1at 5cm and other at 8cm's altough both fresh to my tank 2 weeks. the large one has just started rubbing and flicking laying very lethargic at bottom of tank under cover mostly, gills breath very fast any ideas please i have done frequent 50% water changes, ph good nitrite very low. regards alan

could you give details of the size of your tank, and what sort of filtration and/or powerheads you have? it may be that the loaches are not getting enough oxygen as indicated by the panting.
what temperature is your tank at?
it would be usefull to know the levels of ammonia, nitrite and nitrate too, as well as pH. i know you said they are fine, but this info can help give clues as to what may be happening

that is good your ammonia and nitritite are 0. 
do you know the nitrate reading, or any sort of hardness levels?
when you bought the tank, did it have most of the inhabitants already in it?
when you look at the water surface, are there plenty of ripples across the surface, and if you have any live plants, do the leaves move in the current

how is the yoyo getting on?
is the air stone part of an undergravel filter? and do you have any other filtration - a HOB, internal or external filter? you could try increasing the flow to get more oxygen into the water. the bubbles froman air stone are not particularly effective, and to be more effective, the bubbles need to be small rather than large
something concerning me is that it seems like you have added quite a lot of fish in a short time. the water and the bacteria in the tank generally needs time to adjust to the addition of a few fish to keep the water clean and stable. by adding lots of fish in a short time, in to a newly set up tank can mean that the bacteria cant cope with processing the fish waste fast enough, so you can get water quality problems.
ammonia, nitrite and nitrite can each lead to fish health problems, so a reading for nitrate would also be usefull. if you dont have test, yout local store might be able to do one for you.
just to check, are your test kits relatively new? old ones can give wrong readings
another thing could be - loaches are very sociable, and need to be in groups of 5 or more really. the 2 species need 2 groups of 5. it could be there has been lots of scuffling in the tank to establish dominace, and as the fish are probably feeling insequre due to too small a group, your yoyo could just be feeling very stressed out.
are there caves or hiding places for each loach to have 1 cave or hidey hole each?

loachy still lethargic gills still rapid, the tank i have has been going for quite a while i bought it of a work collegue who had it for 3 years. i have a aqua one 104a internal filter the air stone is just under the substrate i have several stones made into hidy holes and some logwood which has holes for hiding. i am going to LFS this afternoon for some advise regarding me loachy and some more testing kit as the 5-1 kits are out of date. i am also contemplating on getting an external filter as i have had 2 zebras getting stuck behind me filter.
