A Y. Sidthimunki question (or two or three)

Post by Joe Khul » Thu Nov 06, 2008 9:26 pm

I have stumbled across a trio of Sids ( a rarity around here) at my local speciality store and am planning to add them to my tank. I have read here that the bare minimum that I should have is 5. Will only 3 be a problem?

My wife also asks "how long do they live on average?"

As always, thank you for any advice or comments,

Mike

I have never owned one but from what I have read, though this in no way answers your question, they are "...on the IUCN Red List. and are a protected species in Thialand." Loaches Natural History and Aquarium Care. Also they have only once reportedly been breed in captivity. [/i]

No, that info needs updating. All Y. sidthimunki in the trade are captive bred these days.

Joe Khul, if you have tank suitable for them, I would say go for it. It would be better than them being sold singly to other unsuspecting customers. You can always add more to the group when you stumble across some more. In good conditions, I would expect them to live for well in excess of 10 years.

Here is a link to Mad Duff's recent spawning success with this species, the tank set up may give you some pointers: http://www.loaches.com/articles/yasuhik ... ng-success

Hope this helps,

Emma

Well, I have a 55 gallon tank with hiding places, acceptable water conditions and temperature ranges. The community consists of:

2 myers kuhli's
1 pangio kuhli
4 white clouds
3 black neons tetras,
2 corys
7 rummy nose tetras
1 clown pleco
3 male guppies.

If any of these fish would cause diffictulties, please let me know today, as my wife will be stopping off on her way home to liberate these 3 lil beauties.

As in the past; "Speak now, or forever hold your piece"! :o

Tank mates sound fine :D Just keep an eye that the sids are not tempted by the guppies tails. But yea... go for it :!:

Well the three chipmunks have arrived safe and sound. They appear happy and healthy. If I can get some good shots, I will post.

Now all i need are at least 2 more.... *starts counting his pennies and peruses Franks...*

Sorry, I am ecstatic.. especially since I have NEVER seen them in this corner of my state.

Had to share my happy news, thanks for reading
