gravid zebra loach???

Post by Crissyloach » Tue Jul 06, 2010 1:56 pm

About 2 months ago, I got 1 young zebra loach. at the time, the loach was out with the other fish and resting on leaves. I decided to get a second loach about 2 weeks after that. They were the same size. once I put the second in the tank, they both hid away in a hole in a cave. I see them out at feeding time and they are the same size. Yesterday when I looked in the tank, one of the loaches had almost doubled in size. Since then I have set up a tank for the 2 of them and put them both in it. The larger one acts, swims, eats, poops normally. The 2 of them are swimming up the sides of their tank together- I read that loaches do this when spawning. There is no info on the web about zebra loaches breeding. I do not think that the one is sick- I think it is gravid. Any thoughts? I will try to post an pic of them later.

nothing has happened. i am not sure what to do.

* Type of fish that are affected- 1 BOTIA STRIATA- ZEBRA LOACH.
* How long has the tank been set up for? 1 1/2 YEARS.
* Size of tank (dimensions- 11.75, 13.5, 23.5 and volume 16.1).
* How is the tank being filtered? 2 aquaclear 30 filters.
* Water temperature. 79 F
* Your maintenance regime (how often water changes are carried out ONCE A WEEK, what percentage of the water is changed each time 30-45%, how often you clean your filter/s and how do you do this? ONCE EVERY 2 WEEKS- SWISHING THEM IN THE WATER THAT I SIPHONED OUT OF THE TANK.)
* Has anything new been added to the tank recently? (fish, plants, live food, decor etc.) NOTHING BUT AN AIRSTONE, AND A PIECE OF DRIFTWOOD FOR THE PLECOS.
* What other fish are in the tank? tetras- 4 cardinals, 2 red eyes, 1 diamond, 2 glowlights. 1 medium bolivian ram, 1 medium rainbowfish, 3 1 inch albino bristlenose pleco, 1 3 inch bristlenose pleco, and one other zebra loach.
* Symptoms the fish are exhibiting- bloated- looked gravid, and might be breathing fast.
* How long ago the affected fish were added to the tank- 2 months ago, and how long the fish have been displaying symptoms- for 1 week.
* Your current water parameters - ammonia 0 ppm, nitrite 0.3, pH 6.7.

I do not know what is wrong with her or what I should treat her with.

Any chance of a photo? Even if it's from a phone, it may help. If the loach is young I doubt that it is gravid, B. striata appear to take a while to mature. The swimming motion you have seen is common with loaches, and has been dubbed the "loachy dance" here at LOL. You can read up more on this by doing a search but, it's considered to be one of the ways in which loaches determine their complex social hierarchies. Ideally B. striata should be kept in groups of at least 5 so that they can properly display their social structure. It's not uncommon for the alpha loach to be better fed as it dominates over the other loaches.

A picture would be most beneficial :)
