New Tank

Post by TayHudson » Tue Aug 31, 2010 3:47 pm

Finally got my 40 gallon breeder. Along with a few other things.

-New Filter
-Clean fish bucket
-New test kit
-New gravel vac

I'm excited to get it started this week.

I know I'm going backwards, but I'm serious about this so I want to do it right.

Sounds great! You managed a lot quicker than I did. I started with a 1.5 gallon, then 5, then ten, ten, ten, . . . :) You are much smarter. Bigger is easier and better. Start running your filter on the 10 gallon to get that filter cycled.

I wouldn't say I'm smarter. I got help from you guys on here. I wish I wouldn't have done it all backwards. I feel terrible for my fish. But they're still alive and the Loaches are much more active now that the Tetras are in there with them. I have decided to name my Pleco Houdini. Since he's so good at disappearing. Lol.

I have A LOT of rearranging to do in my room now tho. My 10 was able to sit on my longest dresser close enough to the end that was against the wall without being in front of the LARGE windows I have in my room. I'll take a picture for reference.

So that will all be done tomorrow once I either find or buy new Sliders to help move my furniture.

I will take pictures of everything I've gotten so far even tho none of it is all that exciting. (Yet!)

I am extremely excited to start this new fresh, BIGGER tank for my babies.

And take my time. I knew starting how important it was. But I went on impulse. And I hate that I did that.

The guy at the store was asking me some questions about what I wanted to set up and what kind of fish I have already. And I spouted out all sorts of things I've read online and learned from this forum and he was like, "Sounds like you know what you're doing, and what you want. It's nice to hear that." I don't know the HALF of it, but I learn quick.

So thank you so much to all of you that have given me bits and pieces of advice. I & my fish really appreciate it.

I even got a new test kit, the liquid kind :)

Tanks

Post by TayHudson » Tue Aug 31, 2010 9:41 pm

Image

The top picture is where the tanks have to sit till tomorrow. There is no getting around the large windows and radiator in the middle of my room. Haha, or moving my daughters crib.

The bottom picture, (excuse my mess) is where the dresser will be going to.

Basically flip flopping the furniture.

Very uninteresting photos, minus my daughter staring at the tank.

The size comparison makes me giggle. Mostly since I can only hope my fish will like their new home.

I wish I had the time and money to plant some java ferns in the new tank. I'm scared about that too. It looks so much nicer.

those fish are going to LOVE the bigger tank! You have your work cut out for you, but it will be fun,
Your daughter is cute, and it looks like she is going to be a natural fish keeper some day!

I know, but I'm all for it. I can't wait to start setting it up. It will be much more natural looking. At least the gravel will be.

Do you have a new tank stand for the new tank or is it staying on the dresser?
It will weight about 320 pounds when it is full of water. A dresser probably won't be able to support that much weight.

I just have the dresser. I don't have enough money to get a stand right now.

Weight

Post by Gary Mck » Mon Sep 06, 2010 9:45 pm

To see if the dresser can handle the weight, you could get 2 medium sized adults weighing about 320lbs to stand on the dresser and move around a bit. If they feel comfortable you might get away with it. If the dresser doesn't feel comfortable you might have to look at another option. Perhaps put a peice of wood or struts at the back to give extra support.

I had exactly the same issue with our 65g+ other issues, got 3 adults up there and it was not quite solid, had to put more wood into the stand. After this got 4 adults up onto the stand and they felt rock solid. Had issues with our 30g before we got the 65g, as the tank gets bigger the weight/stand issues increases exponentially.
