Rid-ich+ and Levamisole a Deadly Combination?

Post by SgtMajWiggles » Sun Jan 09, 2011 8:35 pm

I've gotten a lot of new fish in the last month so, after trying the new med out on my 10g, I decided to dose all my tanks with Levamisole HCl (Prohibit). I am also treating 2 tanks with Rid-ich. Everybody got the Levamisole last night and this morning when I got up the the 2 tanks with Rid-ich both had casualties and looked aweful! Everybody else was fine. I've been using the Rid-ich for a couple weeks (I'm also having trouble clearing ich from the tank with my new, beloved loach collection... I'm having issues here :p) and this was the first time either tank has gotten the Levamisole.

Is anyone aware of any med-med interactions with these two products?

I am not aware of specifics in this combination, but can only repeat the most common warning:
Never combine meds unless BOTH are labeled as safe to use with each other.

When I am treating new fish I alternate anti-parasite meds and anti-biotics, making sure that each medicine is cleared from the tank before introducing the next.

Many medicines are slightly toxic to the fish. They detoxify many meds through their liver.
Sometimes two meds have similar action in the fish, and dosing 2 similar meds is overdosing the active ingredient.
If 2 meds act in a similar manner, or are detoxified the same way this might overwhelm the fish.
38 tanks, 2 ponds over 4000 liters of water to keep clean and fresh.

Happy fish keeping!

Thanks, Diana - this makes lots of sense.
