Despite the fact that if you have a group of a given species one male will invariably become the boss, they lack the social structure of say, a group of Clown Loaches.
They are not a shoaling species and therefore there is no specific need for the fish to be kept as a group. However, kept singly the owner will miss out on interesting interactions between the fish and if interested in breeding them it's probably more likely if you have several.
